DAWOUD KRINGLE is a New York City based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser. He plays guitar, sitar, dilruba, and bass guitar, has training in jazz and Indian raga (His teachers include Jeff Slatnick, Kelvyn Bell, Ustad Shaheed Parvez Khan, Pat Martino, and Dr. Yusef Lateef), and is fluent in electronic music. His forays into orchestral and chamber music are primarily self-taught; the realization of an old dream to compose for classical instruments and ensembles. He has performed in the US (including NYC venues such as the Apollo Theater, Town Hall, the Blue Note, Birdland, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music), Denmark, Italy, France, and Switzerland. He appeared on many recordings, produced over 15 solo releases, composed for film, theater, and dance performances, and has enjoyed radio airplay in the US, Europe, Russia, and Indonesia. Some of the people he has worked with include Lauryn Hill, Nona Hendryx, Mark Deutsch, Marie Alphonso (Zap Mama), Jojo Kuao (Fela Kuti), DJ Celt Islam, SoSaLa, Gypsy Groovez Orchestra, and the Brooklyn Raga Massive Orchestra. Dawoud has a reputation among the music scene in New York City and elsewhere for being completely original. His work on sitar and dilruba is considered unique and without precedent. His music is often cited as having an other-worldly quality. Stylistically, the music is quite difficult to pin down. Dawoud largely considers genres meaningless, preferring to concentrate on the psychoactive properties and artistic representation of the spiritual qualities of music.
