DAVID PICTON, composer, performer, and instructor, has been living in New York City since 1976. He graduated Mannes College of Music in 1980 with a BM in composition. He has had numerous performances of his original works in various New York City venues. He has been actively involved with New York Composers Circle since 2009, both as a composer, and as a performer. He is also a member of the NYCC jazz quintet, in which jazz composers perform their own jazz compositions at the famous Zinc Bar in Greenwich Village. Mr Picton is also a member of a composer’s and performer’s group called Eclectix. He has had some of his jazz/classical works performed by Cabaret Oboe Trio, an eclectic ensemble featuring oboist Keve Wilson. These performances have been at the Cafe Vivaldi in Greenwich Village, and at the American Music Festival, in Sag Harbor, N.Y. (Long Island). Mr. Picton has been commissioned by Central Park Brass Quintet in New York City, and in the mid- 1980’s, he was commissioned by the Girl Scouts of America to write and record music for promotional videos. He has written and recorded music for environmental videos, and has released four CD’s of his own music, two of them jazz , one of them classical, and one children’s CD. He has been performing regularly as a jazz drummer and pianist in New York City and the area since the 1970’s, and has also performed in Japan, Africa, England, and California, and has been teaching music since the 80’s.
Mr Picton has had radio airplay on WBAI in New York City, as well as on WPKN, in Bridgeport, CT., and overseas, on Estonia Radio. He has also performed live on PBS Channel 13 Television. He has performed many times with such well known jazz musicians as Larry Coreyell, John Hicks, John Pisano, Jack Wilkens, Jimmy Bruno, Patience Higgins, Marvin Blackman, Jay Collins, and Bob Mover. He has also had jazz compositions of his performed by some of these people.
